Travel Tips from The Wandering Whales

Why do we call ourselves the "Wandering Whales"?
- Did you know that whales have one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal? They love to travel, and they always complete their wanderings in small, tight-knit pods. Neat, right? But that’s not all. Female humpback whales not only make friends with one another, but reunite each year.
- Well, so do we! At least twice a year, we travel from across the states to reunite and wander the world together. Our passion for travel keeps us connected, and so we thought it was fitting we name our blog accordingly.
- Our main focus is "glampacking," which is a step above backpacking in the world of travel cheapskates. We share our low-budget itineraries, accommodation tips, screw-ups, and much more.

- Maps.Me has saved our skins more than once. It's a map app that lets you download an entire city or country ahead of time, then provides offline navigation whenever you need it. We've found its offline capabilities to be much more effective than Google Maps, and—even better — it's free!
- Another handy one is FlightHopper, which gives you an idea of whether or not the flight price you're looking at will go down or up in the near future. Very handy for budget-conscious travelers.
How do you find good deals for traveling?
- We love TravelZoo For cheap, last-minute deals. Their "Top 20 Travel Deals" list is second-to-none. Just be prepared to act quickly when one comes up that you like, as they sell out fast.
- We also have a tendency to plan our trips budget-first. So, for example, we'll look at Google Flights to find the cheapest flight destination for our chosen month and plan our trip from there.
How do you discover fun things to do in new places you travel to?
- We almost always book our accommodations through Airbnb, and we've found our hosts to be an absolutely invaluable resource. They're local, and they can tell you where to eat, what to do and see, and how to avoid the biggest tourist traps.
What is your next travel destination and what do you have planned so far?
- We'll be heading to San Francisco next week for a mini trip. So far that involves some foodie adventures, a visit to wine country, and all the local must-sees (like Lands End and the Fisherman's Wharf).
- Our next BIG trip is in the works—Tibet and Mongolia are both on the table for that, and we're pretty excited to get further along in the planning stages.
